Specialty and Surgery Coder

Experienced candidates may be eligible for a sign-on bonus of up to $5,000.
Early-career candidates may qualify for up to $11,000–$17,000 in tuition forgiveness.

United Health Services is seeking a Specialty and Surgery Coder to join our UHS Business Offices in Binghamton, NY. A Surgical Coder assigns medical codes for general surgery procedures for medical records and billing purposes.

Shift: Days- 8-4:30
Hours per week: 40.00
Salary range: $17.46-26.20/hour, depending on experience

Specialty and Surgery Coder Overview

Apply the appropriate diagnosis and/or procedure codes to individual patient health information for data retrieval, analysis, and claim processing for Facility outpatient accounts, facility-based procedural coding and physician practice specialty/surgical coding. Code assignment should be done in accordance to coding and reimbursement guidelines with minimal errors.

Key Responsibilities and Expectations

  • Making sure that codes are assigned correctly and sequenced appropriately as per government and insurance regulations.
  • Complying with medical coding guidelines and policies.
  • Receiving and reviewing patients' charts and documents for verification and accuracy.
  • Receiving and reviewing patients’ charts and documents for verification and accuracy
  • Following up and clarifying any information that is not clear to other staff members
  • Collecting information made by the Physician from different sources to prepare monthly reports
  • Implementing strategic procedures and choosing strategies and evaluation methods that provide correct results
  • Examining any medical malpractice that has been reported by analyzing and identifying the medical procedures, diagnoses or events that lead to the negligence

Position Qualifications

Education/Experience

Minimum Requirement:

  • RHIT certification with an Associate’s Degree in HIT; or CPC, CCA, CCS-P, or CCS certification with an Associate’s Degree or High School Diploma or equivalent; or a High School Diploma and one year of coding experience.
  • If applicant does not possess above noted credentials, must obtain their credentials within 6 months of start date.

Preferred:

  • RHIA certification with a Bachelor’s Degree in HIT.
  • Two years of experience with outpatient coding or professional coding.
  • Two years of experience with encoding systems.
  • Two years of experience with operative report coding.

License/Certification
