Financial Counselor, Binghamton

United Health Services is seeking a Financial Counselor to join our Access Care Team in Binghamton, NY. The Financial Counselor serves as the health care facility’s primary contact to provide financial counseling to all insured patients. This is a BENEFITS-ELIGIBLE position.

Salary range: $15.00 - $20.25/hour, depending on experience

Financial Counselor Overview

The Financial Counselor serves as the health care facility’s primary contact to provide financial counseling to all insured patients for purposes of securing prepayment in full or within 30 days of any patient liability. Liability includes any financial responsibility such as co-payment, deductible and co-insurance.

Financial Counselor Key Responsibilities and Expectations

  • Communicates the Hospital’s financial policy to the patient regarding estimated patient liability due
  • Verifies accuracy of patient demographics at time of counseling such as address, telephone number, and, if missing, secures social security number
  • Makes outgoing calls to patients with pre-scheduled services to advise of any patient liability expected and makes arrangements to obtain amount due within 30 days
  • Secures payment from unscheduled patients prior to discharge of any patient liability deemed due
  • Secures information from patients by telephone or in person in regards to financial status such as employment, salary, and financial obligations; based upon receipt of this information, identifies patients who may be eligible for financial assistance
  • Maintains detailed knowledge of reimbursement regulations and third party billing practices
  • Prepares various daily/weekly/monthly reports, as required
  • Utilizes effective communication in relating to patients’, their families’, and employees’ concerns, often under stressful circumstances
  • Maintains orderly and organized work area as it may be visible to patients; ensures secure and confidential work area

Position Qualifications

Minimum:

  • High School Graduate or Equivalent (GED)
  • 1 year of experience in the collection field
  • 2 years prior office/clerical experience with the ability to perform simple mathematical computations with high degree of accuracy

Preferred:

  • Additional collection experience and knowledge of medical terminology
