Team Lead Specimen Management, Johnson City, NY

United Health Services is seeking a Team Lead of Specimen Management to join Wilson Medical Center Phlebotomy Team in Johnson City NY. The Team Lead supervises the daily activities of In-Patient, Out-Patient, and Laboratory Office at Wilson Medical Center. This is a BENEFITS-ELIGIBLE position.

Team Lead Specimen Management Overview

Supervises the daily activities of In-patient, Out-patient, or Laboratory office. As applicable, functions as a Phlebotomist or Clerk performing services at WMH, BGH or at Off-Site locations. Performs tasks such as Patient Test Order Entry, Inpatient /Outpatient Phlebotomy, Home Draws, Skilled Nursing Facility venipunctures and other outreach locations. Responds to and resolves issues involving workload, personnel, equipment, conflicts, patient, and provider service complaints.

Team Lead Specimen Management Key Responsibilities and Expectations

  • Develops monthly work-schedules for all employees & locations under areas of authority including: daily rotations/assignments, on-call schedules, holiday rotations and scheduling of (PTO) vacations, maintaining adequate coverage. Schedules are prepared 2 weeks prior to onset.
  • Performs (and assigns qualified staff to perform) training & orientation for all new employees, assuring thorough review of all UHS policies and procedures; ensures proper education & training and documentation in laboratory & support services Standard Operating Procedures and protocols.
  • Performs coaching/counseling with employees for failures to adhere to UHS employment & Laboratory specific polices & procedures; Informs supervisor/manager when failures persist.
  • Reviews and amends (Caretime) payroll tracking system to ensure complete and accurate employee recording of PTO and time worked; monitors employee arrival and departure times and missed "punches". Responsible for completion and submission in a timely manner.
  • Monitors daily workflow; reassigns/relocates staff to minimize patient wait time, maximize throughput and to appropriately accommodate STAT, timed and routine testing. Workload includes outpatients and "lab drop" specimens.
  • Periodically measures and reports: Patient volumes and TAT, Employee productivity in performing venipunctures, Test Order Entry and Registration (as applicable).
  • Participates in position interviews & corrective action proceedings; monitors employee performance and documents annually and at the completion of new employee probationary periods. Completes appraisals in a timely manner.
  • Periodically (or as required) participates in performance of “bench work” to maintain acceptable workflow rates and to evaluate the tasks assigned to various department rotation assignments.
  • Ensures staff reviews, understands and documents all new SOPs/protocols AND completes annual competency evaluations.
  • Coordinates assignments that include phlebotomy coverage for home-bound patient draws, skilled nursing facility draws, SUNY (BCC), Community Treatment and Recovery Center, etc.

Position Qualifications

Minimum:

  • High School or equivalent
  • 3-5 years phlebotomy experience AND Three (3) months clinical patient registration, test order entry OR two (2) years' demonstrated experience within United Health Services' laboratories.

Preferred:

  • Associates Degree in Applied Science/health-related field.
  • Three (3) years phlebotomy generalist experience.
  • One (1) year in team leader, section leader or supervisory role.
  • Certification or Registration as Phlebotomist, MOA or MLT.
