United Health Services is seeking Specialty Care Coders to join our team.

Location: 33 Lewis Road, Binghamton, NY
Shifts: Days
Hours per week: per diem
Salary: $21.52 – $32.28, depending on experience


Specialty Care Coder Position Overview

Specialty Care Coder’s apply the appropriate diagnosis and/or procedure codes to individual patient health information for data retrieval, analysis, and claim processing for hospital outpatient accounts, emergency department records, Emergency Department facility-based procedural coding and physician practice specialty/surgical coding. Code assignment should be done in accordance to coding and reimbursement guidelines with minimal errors.

Specialty Care Coder Responsibilities and Expectations

  • Assigns ICD-10 diagnosis and CPT procedure codes or HCPCS codes with appropriate modifiers, creating APC or APG group assignments (as appropriate to the specific position) with required accuracy according to policy for all inpatient and outpatient procedures, specifically for professional specialty/ surgical services and facility based services.
  • Utilizes the computer assisted coding application and/or encoder along with other related resources appropriately in the code assignment process.
  • Performs Operative Report note review and coding. Demonstrates ablility to identify documentation deficiencies as well as opportunities for improvement.
  • Addresses medical necessity edits, claims edits and denial work lists according to policy.
  • Queries physicians and ancillary departments when code assignments are not straight forward or documentation in the record is inadequate, ambiguous, or unclear for coding purposes.
  • Reviews or enters charges based on documentation in the record as appropriate based on policy.
  • Assures all charges have been entered by performing regular reviews comparing scheduled visits and procedures to charges entered, as per the departments charge reconciliation process.
  • Works with providers and clinic employees to promote understanding of billing and documentation requirements to support the coding function.
  • Maintains productivity and quality standards according to policy.
  • Keeps abreast of coding guidelines and reimbursement reporting requirements as well as regulatory requirements.

Position Qualifications

Minimum Required:

  • RHIT certification with an Associate’s Degree in HIT; or CPC, CCA, CCS-P, or CCS certification with an Associate’s Degree or High School Diploma or equivalent; or a High School Diploma and one year of coding experience.
  • If applicant does not possess above noted credentials, must obtain their credentials within 6 months of start date.

Preferred:

  • RHIA certification with a Bachelor’s Degree in HIT.
  • Two years of experience with outpatient coding or professional coding.
  • Two years of experience with encoding systems.
  • Two years of experience with operative report coding.
