Chenango Memorial Hospital is seeking a Senior Clinical Laboratory Technologist to join our Phlebotomy Team in Norwich, NY. A Senior Clinical Laboratory Technologist performs the duties of a Medical Technologist as well as the function of the section supervisor. This is a BENEFITS-ELIGIBLE position.

Salary range: $32.61 - $48.92/hour, depending on experience


Senior Clinical Laboratory Technologist Overview

Routinely performs the duties of a Medical Technologist as well as the
Functions of the section supervisor. Maintaining SOPMs and instrumentation, supervising staff training and competencies, maintains overall operations of their assigned section including ordering, maintenance, quality control, completing performance evaluations, initiating disciplinary actions, scheduling as needed. As requested takes on the duties of the department manager.

Senior Clinical Laboratory Technologist Key Responsibilities and Expectations

  • Continuously monitors staffing levels and adjusts as appropriate to meet various clinical care and financial objectives.
  • Interviews, hires and orients personnel in accordance with policies and procedures.
  • Supervises technical personnel in the performance of routine and complex laboratory testing in one or more of the departments within the clinical laboratory under the direction of the Lab Manager; Evaluates/documents performance of staff and takes corrective action as outlined in Human Resources Policies; Assumes charge responsibility for Laboratory Manager during their absence as requested.
  • Ensures departmental compliance with all relevant regulatory standards; Identifies appropriate internal controls for department and provides mechanism to monitor and enforce compliance; Works closely with various State/Federal agencies as appropriate.
  • Participates in the Quality Improvement Plan; Establishes quality control standards, compiles QC data, and reviews all data to insure the accurate reporting of Laboratory results. Reviews on going QC program data for peer status.
  • Maintains procedure manuals for the department in accordance with NYSDOH, CLIAA or OSHA regulations. Follows CMH, NYS and Federal guidelines regarding compliance, department operations, and confidentiality for themselves and the staff members reporting to them and reports any issues to manager or compliance hotline.
  • Trouble shoots equipment as necessary, identifies problems, and performs repairs whenever possible and/or initiates manufacturer service calls. On a daily basis supervises and /or performs all duties to meet requirements of the manufacturer or regulatory agencies. Supports all responsibilities with appropriate documentation.
  • On a daily basis, reviews completed laboratory data (e.g. computer data entry, completion of all test orders, call list) to insure the accuracy of reports as ordered, confirming that all testing performed is in compliance with current policies and procedures as written in the section procedure manual. Review includes call of all panic and critical levels. Appropriately documents any occurrence that may affect patient care. (e.g. Hemolysis, compromised specimen, QNS). Educates staff on any errors and retrains as necessary; recognizes and interprets as necessary any clinically significant results, insuring the current policy of notification to the ordering provider is met.
  • Enters patient orders in SMS and/or Soft Lab. Verifies all data entry is correct including patient name, provider name, tests ordered. Enters diagnosis codes, provides the appropriate response for the collection of an ABN in SMS if prompted. Verifies specimen labels are complete and accurate. Verifies correct specimen is collected. Receives samples into the Lab system. Verifies provider name and address, call and fax number are entered as required.
  • Co-Chairs monthly staff meeting for department(s) which provide an open forum to identify any issues with need corrective actions and promote communication among staff.
  • Coordinates work on projects with other departments; completes project assignments in a timely manner; Communicates, delegates and oversees project related worked to ensure success.
  • Informs the departmental manager in a timely manner of any operational issues within area of responsibility.
  • Assists in the development and implementation of departmental policies and procedures; Reviews all policy and procedure changes with staff.
  • Prepares and presents information to co-workers/staff after attending conferences and/or workshops.
  • Participates and assists Training and Development in the planning, implementation and evaluation of the continuing education needs.

Position Qualifications


  • Bachelor's Degree in Clinical Laboratory Technology or equivalent. (Grandfathered NYS Licensed CLT).
  • 6 years work experience as a Medical Technologist
  • NYS Licensed Medical Laboratory Technologist


  • ASCP Specialty Certification.
