Position Overview

The Senior Manager, Total Rewards is a high profile position on the Human Resources team at United Health Services. Reporting directly to the Senior Director, Total Rewards, the Senior Manager is responsible for administration and communication of the United Health Services health and retirement benefits program for all staff and retirees, as well as selected projects to strengthen our pay programs and provide a comprehensive approach to employee remuneration. The incumbent will serve as the department’s subject matter expert mainly in areas of health and welfare including medical, dental, vision, tax savings accounts, life and disability insurance, retirement, pension and wellbeing programs.

The Senior Manager, Total Rewards will work closely with the Shared Services group to provide guidance and support for all benefit issues. The incumbent plays a pivotal role in executing the communication and administration of annual Open Enrollment and ensures operational and customer service excellence for all plan participants. In addition, the incumbent will assist in managing compensation for select employee groups, and be part of a team to automate/ streamline pay decisions.


  • Act as the Center of Excellence (COE) in all aspects of benefits and retirement plans administration, design and communications. Communicates the value of benefit offerings and provides guidance to staff and retirees on all aspects of benefits programs. Leads the development and implementation of the annual Open Enrollment Communications and other benefit communications as needed.
  • Drive specific projects on compensation rates and compensation value as it relates to long term strategy. This may include benchmark data, salary structures, career hierarchies. Assist with compensation determination for special groups within United Health Services.
  • Creates and oversees distribution of benefits emails, web page updates, videos, information sessions and other forms of communication.
  • Oversees defined benefit and defined contribution plans. Also teams with the Sr. Director, Total Rewards and Manager, Compensation on special projects related to market pricing for jobs and pay decision making.
  • Responsible for all benefit administration. Works closely with HRIS for reporting, data interfaces with benefit vendors, open enrollment changes, and testing.
  • Lead the annual benefit renewal process including analysis of claims data, working with brokers for negotiating lowest costs and developing RFPs if necessary.
  • Works closely with benefit and retirement vendor partners, legal counsel and consulting firms with follow-up to resolution.
  • Stay current on compensation and benefit trends, issues, regulations, and compliance items to recommend new plans or revise current
  • Identify and evaluate benefits enhancements to meet the needs of our employees, and maintain our competitive position in the marketplace
  • Supports short and long term special projects as needed. Team with HR Leaders and HRIS to implement a state of the art HRIS system.

Position Requirements

Minimum Required:

  • BA/BS degree and minimum 5-7 years of employee benefits and retirement plan experience.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of federal and state regulations and ability to apply them to administration/compliance of plans, including FMLA, NYPFL, ACA, ERISA, COBRA, HIPAA, Social Security and DOL requirements.
  • Strong understanding of benefit programs (healthcare, retirement (403(b), pension, wellness,) as well as the ability to design and implement innovations within a collaborative environment
  • Knowledge of compensation plans and structures, job evaluation, market pricing.
  • Analytical skills and ability to manipulate data, provide statistical summaries, highlight trends.


  • MBA or Master’s degree, CBP certification in benefits, certification in Human Resources (SHRM-CP, PHR) Experience with HR systems and database reporting tools
  • Experience in healthcare
