United Health Services is seeking Primary Care Coders to join our team.

Location: 33 Lewis Road, Binghamton, NY

Salary: $17.46-$26.20, depending on experience

Primary Care Coder Position Overview

Primary Care Coder’s apply the appropriate diagnosis and/or procedure codes to individual patient health information for data retrieval, analysis and claim processing for the following physician based practices and facility coding practices; internal medicine, family practice, residency based practices, pediatrics, hospitalists, urgent care centers as well as evaluation and management services for specialty based practices for Emergency Dept service, Observation, OBED, OPIB and CPEP. Code assignments are completed in accordance to coding and reimbursement guidelines with minimal errors. Emergency Department chart abstraction.

Primary Care Coder Responsibilities and Expectations

  • Assigns or reviews ICD-10 diagnosis and CPT procedure codes or HCPCS codes with appropriate modifiers with required accuracy according to payer policies and regulatory requirements for assigned departments.
  • Reviews and enters charges based on documentation in the record as appropriate based on policy.
  • Assures all charges are entered and performs regular reviews comparing scheduled visits and procedures to charges entered; completes full charge encounter reconciliation process according to policy.
  • Works all appropriate work lists, claims edits and claim denials according to policy and as assigned.
  • Queries physicians when code assignments are not straightforward or documentation in the record is inadequate, ambiguous, or unclear for coding purposes.
  • Works with providers and clinic employees to promote understanding of billing and documentation requirements to support the coding function.
  • Abstracts pertinent information utilizing the necessary software for technical and professional charges from the records as outlined in the policy.
  • Maintains productivity and quality standards according to policy.
  • Identifies concerns and brings them to supervisor or department manager for resolution.
  • Meets standards for compliance with continuing education (CE) as required by AHIMA/AAPC or other applicable licensing certification agency and keeps abreast of coding guidelines, regulatory changes and reimbursement reporting requirements.
  • Understands and complies with policies and procedures related to medico-legal matters including confidentiality, amendment of records and release of information and patient rights
  • Abides by the Standards of Ethical Coding as set forth by the American Health Information Management Association or American Academy of Professional Coders and adheres to official coding guidelines.
  • Meets standards for compliance with continuing education (CE) as required by AHIMA/AAPC or other licensing/certification agency, if applicable.

Position Qualifications

Minimum Required:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent and CPC, CCA, CCS-P or CCS certification; or enrollment in or completion of a coding training program and eligible to sit for the CPC, CCA, CCS-P, or CCCS exam; or an Associate’s Degree in HIT with RHIT certification or eligible to sit for the RHIT exam.
  • Must obtain one of the above noted credentials within 18 months of hire.


  • Bachelor’s Degree in HIT with RHIA certification.
  • One year of coding experience.
