Phlebotomist, Johnson City

United Health Services is seeking a Phlebotomist to join our Laboratory Services Department team at UHS Wilson Medical Center in Johnson City, NY. The Phlebotomist performs daily activities of the Support Services Department based at Wilson Medical Center. This is a BENEFITS-ELIGIBLE position.

Phlebotomist Overview

Phlebotomists at United Health Services perform routine blood draws and specimen collection while also supporting the daily operations of the lab, which can include clerical and medical assisting duties as needed. Phlebotomists should not only be skilled in venipuncture, but also in communication and service excellence. Patients are sometimes anxious or scared when they visit the lab, and our phlebotomists play a key role in helping them feel comfortable.

The Laboratory Services Department at UHS Wilson Medical Center operates at a high volume and offers the most testing options among all of United Health Services’ laboratories. The lab serves both inpatient and outpatient needs at UHS Wilson Medical Center. Consistently operating with the highest quality standards, our laboratories are accredited by the College of American Pathologists’ peer-inspection accreditation program.

Phlebotomist Key Responsibilities and Expectations

  • Perform phlebotomy and specimen collection procedures, including venous and capillary venipuncture, urine collection, H. pylori breath tests, and glucose tolerance testing
  • Demonstrate understanding of fasting and non-fasting tests and select appropriate venipuncture equipment and site relative to a patient’s age
  • Perform data entry for test orders, ensure diagnostic codes meet medical necessity requirements, and confirm that the correct providers will receive test results
  • As needed, act as the department’s receptionist and coordinate clerical/phlebotomy functions to ensuring patients are served within proper turn-around time guidelines
  • As applicable, perform off-site specimen procurement including draws at home, in skilled nursing facilities, and at treatment centers/clinics
  • Perform specimen processing and ensure storage requirements are maintained
  • Treat all patients, family, and other visitors with respect and compassion
  • Comply with all organizational policies and procedures and safety/health regulations
  • Exhibit exceptional organizational skills and a strong attention to detail
  • Demonstrate commitment to United Health Services’ organizational Values of Compassion, Trust, Respect, Teamwork, and Innovation

Position Qualifications

Minimum:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent

Preferred:

  • Completed phlebotomy or medical assistant training program with certification
  • Three months of phlebotomy experience in an acute care setting
  • Knowledge of patient registration and lab test order entry
  • Knowledge of laboratory specimen processing procedures
