United Health Services is seeking a full time Director of Pharmacy Hospital Services to join our Pharmacy Division, whose mission is to optimize patient outcomes through medication management across the continuum of care. In addition to its retail pharmacy locations, which serve our employees and the community, United Health Services also operates an in-patient pharmacy within each of its hospitals.

A leader in innovative and compassionate care, our Pharmacy Division has successfully incorporated decision-support software into clinically monitoring certain medication therapies and has supported the expansion of medication assisted treatment of opiate use disorders within the local corrections system. The successful candidate will join a pharmacy team that has wide-reaching impact—our pharmacy staff regularly serve as adjunct professors and mentors for students from nearby university programs who complete their PGY1 residencies with United Health Services.

Director of Pharmacy Hospital Services Responsibilities

  • Standardizes, plans, organizes, directs and supervises acute care pharmacy services to provide highly reliable pharmaceutical care according to all licensing and standards requirements established by local, state, and federal agencies as well as accrediting bodies
  • Oversees the procurement of drugs, supplies, and equipment used in preparing and administering drugs
  • Manages staff resources by overseeing the recruiting, selecting, hiring, and orienting of qualified individuals and develops core position hiring strategies
  • Evaluates staff performance in an accurate, consistent, objective, and timely manner and ensures opportunities for professional development for pharmacy staff
  • Mentors current supervising pharmacists and technicians as part of an overall strategy to strengthen leadership and succession planning
  • Partners with system and site teams to provide strategic direction, which includes analyzing problems and developing and implementing solutions that enhance services provided
  • Monitors service levels and takes corrective action as appropriate
  • Ensures continuous improvement in quality and patient safety related to pharmacy services, including, but not limited to, implementation of National Patient Safety Standards and remains current on developing trends while coordinating with pharmacy leaders to implement best practices
  • Coordinates medication safety activities and chairs the Medication Safety Committee
  • Develops operational and capital budgets and manages operating expenses and key indicators within the budget for the UHS hospitals
  • Develops, implements, coordinates, monitors, evaluates, and integrates pharmacy services that contribute to the overall success and financial viability of the pharmacy department
  • Conceptualizes, plans, implements, and directs pharmaceutical care

Position Qualifications


  • B.Pharm or PharmD degree from an accredited college or university
  • Five years of experience in a healthcare system pharmacy
  • Three years of experience in a hospital pharmacy management position
  • Current New York State Pharmacist license or eligibility


  • MBA or a master’s degree in healthcare administration (addition to pharmacy education and credentials)
  • Completion of an accredited pharmacy residency program
  • Pharmacist Immunization Certification
