Director Clinical Informatics Position Overview

The position has responsibility for maximizing the utility of all applications across clinical areas of UHS sites and partners with primary goals of clinical quality improvement and user satisfaction. Responsible for understanding clinical technology needs, pain points, duplications, redundancies and industry best practices. Will work with clinical and IT leaders to achieve goals. The primary duties of this position are: (1) to work with the CMIO/CHIO, and UHS Leaders and stakeholders to develop strategies to advance utility of clinical information technology, consistent with the business objectives; (2) to ensure that providers and clinical staff continue to be adept at using Epic and other clinical systems and their skills are adequately refreshed; (3) develop and maintain partnerships and relationships with leaders and key stakeholders as it relates to information technology and business initiatives.

Director Clinical Informatics Responsibilities and Expectations

  • Works with the CMIO and UHS Leaders to develop long term strategies, plans and roadmaps for UHS systems
  • Serve as a member of various committees to help ensure alignment, standards, operational and strategic direction, and industry best practice.
  • Contributes to the UHS Enterprise Architecture, Application Architecture and development work; helps to engage and educate stakeholders in this process.
  • Works with the CIMO and the other IT Leaders to develop common procedures and standards for training.
  • Prepares status reports and communication with appropriate Leaders on decisions, plans and technology direction.
  • Develops and maintains annual operating budgets relevant to the Informatics Department. Exercises appropriate financial stewardship and makes necessary financial decisions that support the IT Department and UHS.
  • Works with the CMIO and IT Leaders: Develops work plans defining tasks, target dates, level of efforts, resources required, skills required, etc.
  • Maintains a high level of awareness and recognition of situations that are possible risk issues and works diligently to mitigate or eliminate risks whenever possible.
  • Manages and leads multiple interrelated projects concurrently as well as manage daily applications’ operations.
  • Involves appropriate individuals and groups when planning for and implementing clinical IT projects or IT-related process changes.
  • Actively participates in decision-making with CMIO and IT Leaders, to change or modify policies, systems, resource allocations, etc. in order to remove barriers and meet customer needs.
  • As needed, facilitates the resolution of application specific end-user questions and issues (i.e. Help Desk calls, internal user group meetings, customer satisfaction surveys, etc.).
  • Regularly communicates progress, issues and results of projects related to systems to CMIO and stakeholders.
  • Works with CMIO to manage and monitor the expectations of impacted personnel regarding applications and technology related projects.
  • Focus on Recruiting and Retention Initiative.
  • Works with direct reports to develop career and skills development plans according to the interest of the employee.
  • Manage projects through the following critical responsibilities: Work with CMIO to develop and ensure compliance with corporate standards and IT methodologies used for technology selection, implementation, upgrades, service pack releases, support and maintenance, etc.
  • Coordinate and involve end-users, impacted department/unit team leaders, as well as participating IT team members, for initiatives.
  • Oversee the educational program for all major software applications.
  • Effectively work across departmental and site lines to achieve desired results and work toward “win-win” solutions.
  • Work with staff to evaluate customers’ satisfaction (encouraging both positive and negative feedback) and to assess customer needs versus services offered.

Position Qualifications

  • Experience working with senior healthcare executives to form plans and gain alignment between organizations and stakeholders. Experience of working in clinical areas is a plus.
  • Bachelors of Science in Computer Science or information technology related field of study is required; OR equivalent work experience in information technology, minimum of five years, in lieu of Bachelor's degree. Master's degree and EPIC Leadership experience preferred.
