Principal Trainer, Binghamton

United Health Services is seeking a Principal Trainer to join our Epic Training Team in Binghamton, NY. The Epic Principal Trainer is responsible for developing and maintaining course curriculum and supporting training materials. This is a benefits-eligible position.

Principal Trainer Overview

The Epic Principal Trainer (PT) is responsible for developing and maintaining course curriculum and supporting training materials. The PT’s work closely with application analysts to ensure training materials and associated tools are in sync with the specific application and training environment. The PT will facilitate and lead training throughout the organization to ensure end users can effectively and efficiently use the system. The PT will partner with department managers, credentialed trainers, and super users to transition new hires/transfers to the appropriate 2nd level workflow training and support program.

Principal Trainer Key Responsibilities and Expectations

  • Understands and interprets clinical and non-clinical workflows, processes and terminology to translate information into educationally sound training content.
  • Reviews new application enhancements/upgrades and develops the content necessary to train and educate end users.
  • The Principal Trainer supports the training environments, curriculums and e-learning for system applications for new hire and end user training. The PT monitors training program effectiveness.
  • Build, test and maintain the training environment.
  • Ensure all classroom training and related materials adhere to current policies and procedures.
  • Teach additional credentialed trainers/analysts who will assist with workflow specific training and support for end users. This will include monitoring the trainer’s adherence to course curriculum, knowledge of applicable workflows, and overall Epic system knowledge.
  • Lead training efforts stemming from software upgrade and updates.
  • Coordinate closely with system analysts in order to develop proper training in consideration of all end users’ roles to ensure effective training in advance of software updates and new version releases.
  • Provide hands on support to system end users with learned application knowledge and documents project issues.
  • Participate in testing and workflow validation of all new systems and modifications before implementation into the production environment.
  • Maintain customer service orientation and responsiveness.
  • Initiates collaboration with others and spontaneously assists others in the delivery of their work. Puts the success of the team, project, goals of IS and organization above self-interest.

Position Qualifications


  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Education or related healthcare field is required.
  • In lieu of a Bachelor’s degree, three to five (3-5) years in a training role, preferably in health care.
  • Must be able to write and edit curriculum for all roles that require training and create job aids and other training materials.
  • Strong organization skills with the ability to meet deadlines and attend numerous meetings.
  • Must be able to lead classroom training and be able to present the material clearly and with confidence.
  • Must be able to lead the credentialing process for identified staff.
  • Self-motivated with the ability to learn new concepts and job requirements quickly as well as handle frequent change.
  • Current Epic certification(s) or
  • Must be willing to travel for training and achieve certification within 90 days of completion of training at Epic in application as assigned.


  • Minimum of two to four (2-4) years Epic experience preferred.
  • Experience in adult education/training in the healthcare industry or related field strongly preferred.
