Credit Union Accountant, Vestal

United Health Services is seeking an Accountant for our Employee Credit Union in Vestal, NY.

Accountant Overview

The Accountant administers core Credit Union Accounting functions, as well as serving as advisor to management and other Credit Union staff and departments on accounting related matters. Completes daily close, monthly General Ledger close, & vault fine-count auditing.

Accountant Responsibilities and Expectations

  • Performs all Credit Union daily and monthly accounting activities including, but not limited to, Accounts Payable and Receivable and Accruals and Prepaids
  • Reconciles major operating General Ledgers such as cash operating accounts and electronic activity, as well as Credit Union corporate debit card accounts; daily/weekly reconciliations including money orders and cashier’s checks; and monthly reconciliations such as gift cards and travel money cards. Reports daily summaries to CEO and compiles monthly reconciliation work papers and summary sheets
  • Reconciles investment portfolio monthly and ensures proper accrual of earned interest
  • Ensures that all outstanding cashier’s checks and money orders do not exceed 120 days
  • “Closes” General Ledger (GL) each month, within 10 days of the end of the previous month
  • Maintains full accrual accounting, per GAAP (Generally Accepted Accounting Principles) and management
  • Provides accounting guidance to other Credit Union departments or personnel, as requested by management
  • Responsible for preparation of budgets and periodic analysis of budget variances.
  • Reconciles Investment Portfolio monthly and ensures proper accrual of earned interest.
  • Cross-trains as primary back-up to Operations Specialist and provides coverage of Operations Specialist functions, as needed, including month-end, quarter-end, and year-end “closing” of Member-side of core processing system
  • Tracks and facilitates payout of staff incentive programs
  • Stores, retains, and tracks all Credit Union records, per Records Retention Procedure, and maintains/administrates procedures and related processes
  • Serves as Credit Union’s liaison with regulatory agency examiners and auditors along with the CEO
  • Covers teller/Member Service Representative duties during lunch and vacations as needed

Position Qualifications


  • Associates degree in accounting or related field plus two years related accounting experience.


  • Bachelor's degree in accounting or related field plus two years related accounting experience preferred, as is credit union/financial institution accounting experience.
